The Volvo 31278860 is a hydraulic tailgate lift motor and pump, superseded by 36011247. It powers the hydraulic struts that open and close a power tailgate. A failing unit shows up as a tailgate that moves slowly, stops partway, or a pump that runs without lifting, sometimes with a fluid leak.
